Joanne Traskiewicz discovered her love of the arts at an early age. She studied music education and fine art at Bucknell University, then went on to earn a Master of Creative Arts Education degree from the Graduate School of Education, Rutgers University. A passion for clay developed a few years later when she took an adult education class at a local high school. She was hooked. Further study in clay took place at Middlesex County College, New Jersey School of Visual Art, and the Creative Arts Center in Thompson Park, Monmouth County.
For many years Joanne has been teaching visual art to primary and middle school students in the Milltown School District. She has also presented classes and workshops for the Monroe Township Adult Education Program and the Monroe Township Public Library. Most recently, in addition to being a student, Joanne has been a teacher of pottery at the Thompson Park Creative Arts Center in Lincroft, NJ.
Joanne is a Commissioner of Cultural Arts for the Township of Monroe, on the Advisory Board of the Middlesex County Arts Middle School, and was an exhibiting member of the former New Jersey Designer Craftsmen guild. Previous exhibits include the Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University, Middlesex County College, the Monroe Township and Jamesburg Public Libraries, and the Milltown Municipal Building.
Joanne’s work ranges from functional stoneware to decorative Raku . “I am drawn to smooth curves and balanced proportions as reflected in the forms of my pots. Designs inspired by nature and interlocking geometric patterns also intrigue me and are often carved or applied using tape resist.”
