Creative Journaling:  Turning Thoughts into Art

One Day Workshop — Saturday, September 5th
Preregistration required

Workshop Overview
Journaling is a powerful practice for self-reflection, emotional well-being, and personal growth.   By putting thoughts, feelings, and experiences onto paper, individuals create space for greater self-awareness, stress reduction, and creative exploration. While traditional journaling relies primarily on words, combining writing with visual art can deepen the reflective process and unlock new forms of expression.

Activity
Creative Journaling: Turning Thoughts into Art is an interactive, hands-on workshop that introduces participants to the art of transforming personal journals into creative works of
self-expression. Through a combination of prompts and mixed-media techniques participants will learn how to enrich their journaling practice using color, texture, imagery, and design.
The workshop emphasizes accessibility and creativity over artistic skill.  Participants will explore a variety of techniques while working with everyday and recycled materials such as magazines,
newspapers, packaging, scrap paper, and found objects. These materials will be repurposed into unique journal pages that reflect individual experiences, memories, ideas, and aspirations.
Throughout the session, participants will be encouraged to experiment, play, and discover their own creative voice in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
Guided discussion  will help spark inspiration, reduce creative blocks, and demonstrate how art can complement written reflectionas a tool for mindfulness and emotional expression.

Workshop Objectives
● Introduce journaling as a tool for self-reflection, mindfulness, and stress reduction.
● Demonstrate simple mixed-media art techniques suitable for all skill levels.
● Encourage creative expression through the integration of words, images, and artistic elements.
● Promote sustainable art-making practices through the use of recycled and repurposed materials.
● Build confidence in personal creativity regardless of prior artistic experience.
● Create a meaningful, personalized journal page or series of pages that participants can continue developing beyond the workshop.
Target Audience
This workshop is suitable for teens, adults, seniors, and intergenerational groups. No prior experience in art or journaling is required.

Materials
Participants will work with a variety of accessible and recycled materials, such as magazines and newspapers, dried leaves, etc.

Expected Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will have created personalized journal pages that combine written reflection with artistic expression. They will leave with practical techniques, creative inspiration, and a deeper understanding of how journaling and art can support self-care, mindfulness, and personal growth in everyday life.

About Teaching Artist
Faith Saunders is a mental health professional and a self-taught artist. For her, art is not only about creativity and self-expression but also a practice that supports her mental well-being.
Through dedication and continuous exploration, Faith has worked across various mediums to develop a distinctive artistic voice rooted in her love of color, texture, and form. Her work is characterized by the thoughtful blending of natural elements—such as sand and dried leaves—with repurposed materials like dryer sheets, creating pieces that evoke a sense of nostalgia and connection.
Faith finds inspiration in the often-overlooked details of everyday life, transforming the ordinary into meaningful works of art.
Lastly, for Faith, art is both a sanctuary and a bridge—offering a space for personal reflection while fostering connection with others.
